How to Collect Free Items Safely

Most pickups go fine. A few habits make them go fine more often.

Before you go

• Reply to the post and confirm the item is still there. Items get taken without the listing being updated.
• Agree a time. Turn up on time, or tell them early if you cannot.
• Ask for the size if it matters. Check it will fit your car and your door.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.

At the pickup

• If you are unsure about the address, ask whether the item can be left outside or at the door.
• Bring someone with you for large or heavy items.
• Check electrical items look safe before you plug them in at home. Free does not mean tested.

Red flags

Do not pay for a freebie, and do not share bank details. A real giveaway asks for neither. If a poster asks you to send money first, walk away.
